it is a very engrossing book which is hard to put on the shelf so, it stays on my desk, constantly. It's a wonderful addition to the classic bonsai texts, and a continuous source of inspiration, for future designs.

Beautiful book...I simply cannot imagine as how with the practice of bonsai ,I can even continue without applying the principles elucidated by the author. Mind blowing and very clear.
The other two books on juniper and pines wouldn't be any less I am sure.
Very good print.and excellent packaging.
Thanks you

Stone Lantern"s price for "Principles of Bonsai Design" was 30% of what Amazon, Thrift Books, and other sellers were asking. I'm new to the world of Bonsai and have been told, this is the one and only book I need, to begin this journey and to use as a guide to whatever mastery of Bonsai, I might choose. In Principles of Bonsai Design - Bonsai as Art Traditions and innovations - The art of Display", author, David De Groot, introduces and develops the elements of philosophy, logic, geometry, botany, and design needed to Understand Bonsai.

have the old Basic Bonsai Design. Wanted this new book.

This is a good company that delivers what it promises. I have ordered from then several times with great experiences.

Very thorough detailed explanation of design principles in the art of bonsai. Quality print paper, semi-gloss, good thickness and many great example photos. On a less positive note, it seems somewhat basic or common sense, but if you want concrete clarification for why you do what you should do to produce quality bonsai it is a valuable resource and worth the price and very likely take your skill to a more professional level.

Excellent book on bonsai design. Best price I found on the internet as well. Shipping was fast and the book arrived in excellent condition.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. The photos and illustrations are a definite plus. I really want to get a tree to live for more than a few months. I feel confident that with this book, I will be able to succeed with my goal.

The book is an excellent source of "engineering " and art in designing Bonsai. FUll of illustrations and fotos to make it easy to understand the concepts...

I ordered this book for my husband. He and David de Groot are friends thru bonsai, and we have bought all his books. The order was filled swiftly and packaged very well. Dan has been happily reading and even took the book to work to show off to his staff..

Shipping was perfect and fast. The book was in absolutely good condition. I highly recommend it.
Thank you very much.

I now have a copy of each edition! The photographs that illustrate each concept make the idea so much clearer.
There is a consistent and deliberate method to presenting the ideas that makes it easier to understand, especially for someone without a Fine Arts background.
Worth it!

Great book, having practiced Bonsai for over 50 years I still find interesting tips & illustration's. B.J.

I am a novice and this book really helps me to understand the design principles. And it helps me to see what needs to be done to get to the refinement stage which I only have 1 bonsai that will be there with in 2 years the rest will be in development for years to come. I have to get the courage to make some drastic cuts on few to get them back to where they can be a bonsai and not just a tree in a pot. I am looking forward to Bonsai on the Bayou conference in Houston where I will take advantage of the masters coming.

Great book it’s a must read for new comers to bonsai in my opinion

This is without a doubt the best bonsai design book I’ve ever read. It takes a stepwise approach, starting with the basics of aesthetics, then discusses proportion, relationships between the tree and the pot, and then specifics about each bonsai design and style of display. This book is invaluable, and I’m glad I have it in my library now.

I'm new to Bonsai. Right now I enjoy looking at what people can do and create.

This is my third copy! The information contained in the book is relevant to beginners and experienced bonsai artists alike. It should be in everyone's library for a good read and a continuous reference.

Will definitely purchase again

This is the book for all English speaking Bonsai enthusiasts. David De Groot is a national treasure and a wonderful person. The Pacific Bonsai Museum is testament to David's contribution to Bonsai, especially here in North America.

Winifred D.
I have the first edition of this book. I love that more color photos were used as well as the chapters on design. We can always go over information that we have used before
Kevin A.
Delivery was extremely quick. Have had only a chance to skim thru the book. What I had seen and read is excellent.
Jon L.
This is a very deeply aesthetic look into design of bonsai trees, way beyond my needs. I was hoping for something more practical for my immediate needs, not a 30 year overview and planning guide.
Tia L.
This is a beautiful and inspiring book to raise your bonsai skills up to the next level. Just flipping through the book and admiring the pictures makes you want to get out and start working on your trees. There are detailed and specific instructions for tree development and David De Groot explains the why of how trees are styled. Every page has pictures, and in addition to the stunning bonsai trees are diagrams, and pictures of trees in nature. It is a must-have for bonsai enthusiasts and I highly recommend it.
John D.

Today I received the second edition of De Groot's book and it is excellent. Excellent explanations, richly illustrated. An excellent addition to the basic works on bonsai, which deal with the craft techniques. I ordered it from Germany and the shipping was very fast.
Heidi P.
As this is a pre-order, I can't rate it for the book itself. But suffice it to say I know it will be brilliant! I'd actually had the honor of "chatting" with David de Groot via FB a little while ago, and a more thoughtful and generous man one couldn't find :-). All the way down in New Zealand here, we look forward eagerly to this updated edition coming onto the market. And huge thanks to Wayne for enabling it to happen!!!
Roberts C.
I am interested in the design aspect, that’s why I ordered my book.

I judge a book by what I learn from it. On that basis this book gets an A. There is so much to digest and every time I go through a chapter I learn more. Chapter 13 on selecting plant material is my favorite. The illustrated treatment of the selected material is excellent
Jeff R.
"Principles of Bonsai Design" is an outstanding book that focuses, as the title implies, on the actual designing of bonsai. This is not your typical general overview book. An experienced bonsai practitioner friend of mine recommended the book to me. It does a great job of explaining design principles which can be applied to many other fields besides bonsai. The pictures and illustrations are excellent and help to visually reinforce the learning. I was so happy with this book and purchased another one for my Dad. Finally, the delivery and packaging from Stone Lantern were fantastic. They are a great company to do business with.
