I don't remember where or when this tree came. Best guess is it has been here for 7 or 8 years. Like all of the bonsai we sell, the photo is the tree you'll get. 

Sawara cypress are are cold climate trees that can be grown outside almost anywhere in the U.S.,  and a dormant period of at least five or six weeks (preferably more) is recommended., with night temps at or below freezing for maximum heath. In most areas they can be grown outside year round, though some protection is good where winters are severe. This tree, one of our few False cypress (Chamaecyparis), has wintered here in northern Vermont in an open box (sides only, no tops or bottoms) covered by leaves and snow in an area protected from strong winds. Our success rate has been virtually 100% for hundreds of cold climate trees over the years.

Most False cypress are quite versatile and can be grown in light shade to full sun. You can let the soil dry to just slightly damp but be careful not to allow the roots to become bone dry while sitting in the hot sun.
